Find Your Rhythm at Beat Bar
An NYC-inspired cycling studio turns sweat into community on the South Shore
A Vision Set to Music
Walk through Beat Bar’s glass doors and the outside world fades: neon accents energize low lighting, sub-bass vibrates through polished concrete, and a subtle scent of eucalyptus hangs in the air. It’s the kind of atmosphere more often found in SoHo than in the suburbs, but founders—and sisters—Ju-Young Cho and Jessica Main insist that was exactly the point.
“Music is the language we all speak,” says Cho, who spent seven years teaching cycling in Boston and New York before bringing that big-city buzz back home. “I wanted riders to feel something visceral the moment the first down-beat hits.”
The idea to develop a city-inspired cycling studio came to life five years ago during a late-night chat in their parents’ kitchen. By dawn, Main had mocked up a logo on scrap paper; today, that same graphic glows behind the instructors’ riser like a badge of intention—proof that passion, planning, and a few gutsy leaps can turn sketches into brick-and-mortar success.
More Than Just a Workout
Beat Bar’s 45- and 60-minute rides are deliberately theatrical (and they’re beloved by cyclists for that reason). Rows of Stages™ bikes face a runway-style podium where instructors deliver full-body choreography, doing tap-backs and push-ups, and haloing hand weights in sync with the soundtrack. Between sprints, riders are cued to close their eyes, and breathe to the beat, and as Cho often reminds them over the mic to drop whatever story isn’t serving them.
That mind-body connection is intentional. “We program every class like a set list,” explains Main, a former event manager who knows her way around dramatic pacing. “There’s a build, a release, and a finale. People come for the burn, but they leave on a mental high.”
Heart-rate monitors and leaderboard stats satisfy data-driven exercisers looking to track their progress, but at Beat Bar, community is more important than competition. Regulars celebrate each other’s milestones—first 50 rides, 100-class shout-outs—with high-fives and confetti boomerangs on Instagram.
The Beat Bar Difference
While boutique cycling studios are no longer rarities, Beat Bar stands out for its philosophy and attention to detail. Despite the chic, modern, urban-inspired atmosphere, the studio isn’t intimidating; in fact, it’s just the opposite. Newcomers receive one-on-one guidance to ensure proper bike fit and form, with an emphasis on riding strong and safely. The goal isn’t just to break a sweat—it’s to build confidence and skill with every pedal stroke.
Equally special is the studio’s musical backbone. Every class playlist is handcrafted by the instructor, blending genres and tempos to take riders on a journey. From dance-floor anthems to unexpected acoustic drops, the music is more than background noise—it’s the heartbeat of the ride.
Perhaps most importantly, Beat Bar is grounded in inclusivity. Riders of all backgrounds, identities, and fitness levels are welcomed with intention. “If you want to move, we’ll make space for you,” says Main. “That’s the promise.”
Rooted in the South Shore
Though inspired by the aesthetics and pace of New York City, Beat Bar’s foundation is distinctly local. Ju-Young and Jessica grew up on the South Shore, and they’ve built their business on the same values they were raised with: family, resilience, and showing up for your people.
“This is where we learned how to take care of each other,” says Main. “So it means everything to create something that gives back to the community that shaped us.”
Even as the studio grows in popularity, the sisters are committed to keeping it personal. From remembering your name after one class to offering support through life’s ups and downs, Beat Bar is more than a fitness space—it’s a place to belong.
Looking to the Future
As momentum builds, Ju-Young and Jessica are focused on the future, but not at the expense of their founding ethos. Their next steps are all about deepening the studio’s impact: expanding class offerings, introducing community events, and continuing to foster an environment where every rider feels seen, supported, and strong.
“Our five-year goal isn’t about franchising,” Cho says. “It’s about helping more people find strength, joy, and connection—one ride at a time.”
